Thompson Fans 12 as Auburn Defeats Alabama

MONTGOMERY, AL – Keegan Thompson’s career-high 12 strikeouts led the way for Auburn’s 5-3 victory over Alabama in front of 6,219 strong at Riverwalk Stadium for the seventh annual MAX Capital City Classic presented by MAX, you family credit union.

Thompson – a pre-season Golden Spikes Award watch list member – used 119 pitches to hold the Tide to three runs on only one walk through 7.1 innings for his third win of the season. Thompson was selected as the MVP while Auburn improved to 6-1 in the annual rivalry game.

The sophomore righty cruised through five innings before finally running into trouble in the sixth. Mikey White drove in the first Alabama run with a triple. Kyle Overstreet followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 Auburn. Thompson left the game with one out in the eighth before Trey Wingenter stranded the tying run at second base to preserve Auburn’s lead.

Auburn jumped on Jake Hubbard in the third inning with an RBI-single from Jordan Ebert then a two-run single by Hunter Tacket. The Tigers tacked on a run in the fourth and one in the seventh after two wild pitches from Thomas Burrows.

Trey Wingenter relieved Thompson to keep the Crimson Tide off the board in the last 1.2 innings. Wingenter earned his first save on the season.

Daniel Robert led the Tigers with three hits and a walk. Kyler Deese and Ebert finished with two hits each.

White keyed Alabama’s offense with a pair of triples and two runs scored.
